Thank you so much for returning the weekly progress reports so promptly.  The students really are most successful when we work together (home and school).  They are doing so well.  Parents, thank you for setting such a great example concerning the importance of academics and responsibility.  I will send another progress report out this Tuesday (since Monday is a holiday).  They should again be returned the following day.  Thank you for your support.

Help needed:   Special thanks to those families who have already sent in money.  It is much appreciated.  Each year I subscribe to TIME for Kids. It is a weekly current events publication for kids. I use these in the classroom for reading comprehension. It is a great way to teach them about the world around them, while also building reading skills. The cost is $4.50 per child for the year. If anyone is interested in donating or helping out (by sending the amount for your child) that would be greatly appreciated. All students will be receiving the publication regardless of the amount collected. Each class is given some money from the Halloween carnival earnings. I use this money throughout the year for projects. The remaining cost that is not donated for Time for Kids will be deducted from the usual carnival money for our class. I am just trying to make our carnival money stretch a little farther by offsetting this cost. I understand if you are not able to help with this at this time. Thank you so much for your help and support!

I apologize for the additional update.  Mondays are crazy.

Updates for the week of August 27

6th grade parents:

Our first weekly progress reports were sent home today, August 27.  Please sign and return them to school tomorrow.  Students will receive a red card for each day the progress report is not returned.  It seems that we are off to a great start.  Please don't panic if you see a grade that is lower than expected.  There is still plenty of time to raise it.  This should serve as a guide for you and your child to know what they should work on to achieve the grades they would like for the report card.  Also, keep in mind that we have only had 2 weeks of school, and the students have only had tests in spelling/vocab.  More tests will be coming (a science test today 8/27), and may affect their grades.  I hope you find these progress reports to be a good tool to help your child to be successful.  Thank you for your support.

Friday, August 31 will be a free dress day for $1.00 for the SPCA.  A note was sent home today.

So far, we have not had a problem with missing homework. If a student forgets their homework, you will receive a phone call at recess to let you know. They will not receive credit for that assignment. They may need to complete the assignment so that they will understand the material; however, we do not give credit for late work in junior high. I appreciate your help and support with this matter. It truly is for their continued success in life, that we teach them the importance of responsibility.

Eucharistic Adoration--If you are not familiar with this Catholic tradition, ask your child about it.  We will be going to Eucharistic Adoration in the chapel once a week.  It's a wonderful, peaceful time to spend some time in prayer.  If possible, spend some time discussing with your child some prayer needs of your family and friends.  They can bring these to Jesus in prayer at adoration.

CAMP FORMS
6th grade parents:  Camp forms are being sent home today, August 21.  They are not due until Sept. 19.  I am sending them out early because there is a lot to fill out.  Also, there is form to have signed by your child's doctor.  If they will need to take any medication at camp (even vitamins, tylenol, etc), they will need to have a signed doctor's form.  No medication will be dispensed at camp without this note on file.  Also, if your child uses an inhaler, please include that.  Even if they rarely need it, they may need it at camp when they are at a different elevation and doing different outdoor activities.  It is very important that they have it with them.  You will also need to copy your medical insurance card and attach it to the camp forms in the space provided.  I know this is a lot, but hopefully with sending the forms out now, it won't be too much of an inconvenience.

6th and 8th grade:

Please be advised that no credit will be given for late work.  We (the junior high teachers) are working hard to teach responsibility, and not let bad habits develop.  I have begun entering grades; you can check them on option C.  I will begin sending 6th grade weekly progress reports on Monday, August 27.  Please use the currently posted grades as a guide.  Remember we have only been in school for a week, so there is not a lot of work calculated in the grade yet.  It is a good indicator, if your child has missing work, that it is time to address this problem.  However, if they have one low score on an assignment, please do not panic.  They still have plenty of time to raise the grade.  Thank you so much for your support in this matter.

We survived the first week, and it seems that we are off to a great start.  The students are doing a great job of turning in all homework on time.  They are adjusting to junior high, and I am so proud of them.

Safe Environment training:  All parents who wish to volunteer to drive on field trips, go to camp, work in the classroom, etc. will need to be trained or re-trained for safe environment.  The diocese is requiring this.  Even if you were already trained, it is necessary to attend a new training.  Those of you who plan to go to camp or who have signed up to drive, should attend a safe environment training as soon as possible.  I know Mrs. Blackburn has scheduled several training meetings; the next one is scheduled for Tuesday, August 21 at 6PM.

Volunteer needed:  I would like to have a parent volunteer to make cupcakes or some other special treat to celebrate the Blessed Mother's birthday.  Her birthday is on September 8, so we will celebrate on Friday, September 7.  The Bishop will be here to say Mass on that day to also celebrate our 85th anniversary.  We will also be saying a Rosary in our classroom (I am sure the Blessed Mother prefers prayers to cupcakes.)  I would like the cupcakes for the students to celebrate with a special snack at recess.  Please let me know if you would like to provide this.  You can earn volunteer hours for your time.  What a fun and easy way to earn hours!

Update for August 15 Mass

We survived the first day, and things are running smoothly.  I just wanted to post an update to let you know about the dress code for tomorrow, Wednesday, August 15.  Tomorrow is a holy day of obligation and we will be having Mass at 8:15.  Due to the extreme heat, Mrs. Blackburn is allowing the students to wear their uniform shorts (even though it is a Mass day) if they choose to do so.  Yay!  Thank you Mrs. Blackburn!  Feel free to join us for Mass.  Also, if you have not yet subscribed to the email list for my blog, you may wish to do so.  Then you are automatically notified by email whenever I add a post to the blog.
