Homework:  We regularly have about 1/3 of the 6th graders who are no turning in homework. Not only is this not acceptable by OLM standards, it is not preparing them well for the future.  I am asking for parents' help in encouraging better study skills and habits.  It will only prepare them for success.  When their homework is not turned in, they are kept in at recess to complete it; however, no credit is given for late work in junior high.  Homework is not assigned as merely busy work; It is necessary to complete all homework so that they will understand the more difficult concepts.  I tell them that they are going to do the work regardless, so they might as well do it on time, and receive points in their grade for their efforts.  In addition, students with missing work will not be allowed to participate in many of the fun activities that we have at OLM.  Parents, I greatly appreciate your help with this matter.  Working together, we can make our children successful learners.

Fr. Gene Scholarship:  This scholarship is given in memory of a past priest of our parish.  Students are to write a brief essay of why they want to receive the scholarship and why it is important for them to attend OLM School.  This offers them a great opportunity to learn skills at applying for scholarships....something they will need in the future.  Also, one student will be awarded the scholarship to go towards their tuition for next year.  Scholarship applications and essays are due Wednesday, April 29.  This is open to current 5th and 6th graders.

ATTENTION 8TH GRADERS:  Castle Day is fast approaching.  It is scheduled for May 12.  As a culminating project for Romeo and Juliet, the 8th graders will work in groups to build castles.  These will be on display for the school on Castle Day.  We will also be asking each 8th grader to provide Capri Suns and Circus Cookies.  Look for a note about this in the near future.  Eighth graders should also putting together their costumes for this event.  Details will be given in class.
