Lunches:  We are in need of a few parents to help with our jr. high fundraising lunch project.  About once a month, each jr. high class is responsible for shopping for and cooking lunch for the school.  The proceeds from these lunches directly benefits the hosting jr. high class.  Without these lunches, many extra activities are not possible, such as a 7th grade field trip, a nice graduation dance, etc.  Extra money raised in 6th grade is passed on with the class to 7th.  The 7th graders usually take a nice field trip either on amtrak or a via bus.  Also, the 7th graders host the graduation dance.  Please consider sharing your time and talents to help with this cause.  If you are able to help in this way (you earn service hours), please contact Mrs. Lorenzi via email or call Carnation. As of right now, the 6th and 7th grade classes have no one to help with this.  Two or three parents could do this together, even if your child is in a different grade.
_________________________________________
Homework help will begin this week.  It is Monday-Thursday, 2:30-3:30.  Please be prompt in picking up your children, as many times the teachers have appointments.  Sixth grade homework help is with Mrs. Wennberg on Mondays and Wednesdays and with Mrs. Lorenzi on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

October Mass:  The 6th grade and kindergarten classes will be planning the October Mass which will be the Blessing of the Animals in honor of St. Francis.  I will be collecting pet pictures (or pictures of the pets with the students) to use on our class poster.  This poster will be brought up during the offertory at Mass.  Please send in your pet pictures by Friday, Sept. 11.

A+ spelling app:  This app is free and a great way to review for spelling tests.  The student types in the words and records them in his/her voice.  The app then gives them a test saying the words to them in their own voice. The app all keeps track of the words missed, so the student and parent know which words to review.  This is a great tool to use.  Put your words in the app and practice them each night until the test.

Planners:  Several students are not getting their planner signed.  A few get them signed but they are not filled out. Parents, please do not sign a blank planner.  This is actually a disservice to your student.  If you sign it with nothing written down, then they are not learning the importance of being responsible.  If a student comes to school with a signature on a blank planner, I count it as "unsigned."  If they bring it to you blank to sign, please refuse to do so until they have written down the days assignments.  This should be a tool for you to check that their homework is completed.  If nothing is written there, parents are unable to check if the work is completed.  I am seeing the results of this, as a few students are not turning in all homework.  Remember, parents and students also have the teachers' blogs as an extra tool to confirm assignments.  Students must do their part to be responsible, as dates are sometimes changed or assignments modified after the blog has been published.  I do my best to stick to the blog, but sometimes it is necessary to adjust.  Thank you for your help with this matter.  Together we can help our students to be successful!

On Friday, August 28, we will have a free dress day for $1.  The proceeds will be donated to the SPCA.  Tickets will also be on sale at lunch for 25 cents.  There will be a raffle on Friday August, 28 to win lunch with Mercy at the Fruit Barn.

No shorts are allowed on Monday, August 10, as this is a  Mass day.
_______________________________________
The Back to School dance will be held this Friday, August 14, 2:30-5:00 PM in the auditorium for all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.  Plan on attending...it should be fun!  The student council officers will be announcing details.
_______________________________________
Safe Environment training:  All parents who wish to volunteer to drive on field trips, go to camp, work in the classroom, etc. will need to be trained for safe environment.  Even if you have been trained in the past, this is a re-training year, so everyone will need to attend a training meeting. The meetings are about one hour.  The diocese is asking everyone to be re-trained by December; however, you will not be allowed to work in the classroom or drive on field trips until you have been trained, so it is best to do this as soon as possible.  I know Mrs. Blackburn has scheduled several training meetings; check the family newsletter for dates and times. Please note, children are not able to attend this meeting.
__________________________________________
Volunteer needed:  I would like to have a parent volunteer to make cupcakes or some other special treat to celebrate the Blessed Mother's birthday.  Her birthday is on September 8.  We will also be saying a Rosary in our classroom (I am sure the Blessed Mother prefers prayers to cupcakes.)  I would like the cupcakes for the students to celebrate with a special snack at recess.  Please let me know if you would like to provide this.  You can earn volunteer hours for your time.  What a fun and easy way to earn hours!
