Miracle Worker Performances will be October 15 and 16 at 1:15 PM in the auditorium.  Some students will be performing both days, and some will be performing on one of the days--depending on which scene they are in.  We are performing 5 scenes from The Miracle Worker.  We will be inviting grades 3 and up to attend.  Parents are also invited to attend.

To Kill a Mockingbird-Our next class novel will be To Kill a Mockingbird.  In an effort to best prepare for high school we will be learning a skill called annotating.  This works best if each student has his/her own copy of the book that he/she can write in.  They may also choose to use 4 colors of highlighters.  You may wish to purchase this book soon, as they will need it by Monday, Oct. 17.  If students do not bring their own copies, they will borrow one from the school library.  However, they will have to write on post-it notes instead of writing in the book, since it is not their own copy.  I think they will find it beneficial to have their own copy to mark in and take notes.   They are not allowed to use a copy of the book that was previously used (last year) by one of my students.  They will need a CLEAN copy that has not already been marked.  I will check for this on Oct. 17.  Annotating is a skill that they will definitely need in high school.  While it is challenging, it is worth our time and effort to work on this in 8th grade.

Camp forms and payment are due Sept. 20.  Once all See's Candy money is turned in and calculated, we will let you know, how much will be deducted from each student's camp fee.  If they will need to take ANY medication while at camp, they will need to have the physicians form signed.  Please do not wait until the last minute to do this.  This can sometimes take time to get all medical forms filled out and signed.

Blessing of the Animals:  On October 4, our school will celebrate the Feast of St. Francis with a Mass and Blessing of the Animals.  The 6th grade is planning this Mass.  We will be making a poster to be carried up at Mass.  Please send in any pet photos that you would like included by Friday, Sept. 20.
___________________________________________________________

The schedule will be different this week due to ITBS.

We will test in the mornings, and have 3 classes following testing each day.  Since I will not be assigning homework during this week of testing.....I will NOT be having homework help.  The productivity of homework help has improved. Thank you for stressing to your children the importance of using their time wisely.  Please remember to be mindful of picking up your children on time.  Homework help ends at 3:30.  After that, students will be sent to extended care, and a fee will be charged.  There are still some students who are not getting picked up on time.  This makes it very difficult for teachers to schedule appointments.  Thank you for your help and understanding with this matter.

There are some families who have requested more candy.  They may be able to help you sell your remaining candy.  Thanks again for your support!

Update:

Friday, September 13 is a Spirit Free Dress day!  Wear your school colors....navy blue and white.  You may wear a school spirit shirt or a PE shirt with shorts, jeans, etc.  Remember, Mrs. Blackburn is giving us these extra free dress day as a privilege.  If we do not follow the rules (for example, spirit free dress for this day), we will lose this privilege.  Everyone has a PE shirt, and those work just fine....let's be the most spirited class!

Camp fundraiser!!!  We are so lucky this year to have an opportunity to offset the cost of camp.  Mrs. Pellicano has so graciously organized a See's Candy fundraiser for the 6th grade.  We are selling See's candy bars for $2, and the 6th grade profits $1.25 from each bar sold.  We are asking each 6th grader to sell a minimum of 1 case (24 bars), but PLEASE try to sell more. If each student does this, it will decrease each student's cost by $29.  The more we sell, the less parents will have to pay for camp.  Let's all work together on this.  All money raised will go together and then be equally distributed to equally offset each family's camp fee.  As a junior high parent who just had this expense last year, I know how this time of year can get expensive, and so appreciate Mrs. Pellicano's help with making camp more affordable for all of our 6th grade families this year.  She will be at open house in the auditorium to distribute candy to the 6th graders.  She will have all information to hand out on Sunday.  Please plan to attend this Sunday, August 25.  Classrooms are open 11AM - 1PM, and there is a lunch in the auditorium until 2PM.  During this time you can ask any questions of Holly Pellicano, pick up your candy to sell, and also purchase any candy if you wish.  A note was also sent home yesterday.  You can also email Holly at Pellicano3@att.net.

Safe Environment training:  All parents who wish to volunteer to drive on field trips, go to camp, work in the classroom, etc. will need to be trained or re-trained for safe environment.  The diocese is requiring this.  If you attended training LAST year, you do not need to attend again this year.  If you attended before last year, you will need to be re-trained.    Those of you who plan to go to camp or who have signed up to drive, should attend a safe environment training as soon as possible (if you did not do so last year).  I know Mrs. Blackburn has scheduled several training meetings; the next one is scheduled for Wednesday, August 14 and 6PM.
__________________________________________
Volunteer needed:  I would like to have a parent volunteer to make cupcakes or some other special treat to celebrate the Blessed Mother's birthday.  Her birthday is on September 8, so we will celebrate on Friday, September 6.  We will also be saying a Rosary in our classroom (I am sure the Blessed Mother prefers prayers to cupcakes.)  I would like the cupcakes for the students to celebrate with a special snack at recess.  Please let me know if you would like to provide this.  You can earn volunteer hours for your time.  What a fun and easy way to earn hours!
___________________________________________
Sports Meeting:  There will be a meeting on Thursday, August 15 at 6:00 PM with Mrs. Blackburn in the auditorium.  All students (and a parent) should attend who plan on participating in the sports program this year.  This includes:  boys soccer, girls volleyball, boys and girls basketball, boys baseball, and girls softball.  Track will have a separate meeting later in the year.  Please contact Mrs. Blackburn if you plan on playing sports, but will not be able to attend the meeting.
