October 13-17

Happy Camping 6th graders!

Just a few notes of concern:

St. Vincent de Paul lunches:  This is a service that our school provides for the hungry in Merced.  It has come to our attention that lately many students have not been packing what can be considered a "lunch."  A lunch should not be a granola bar and a capri sun, or a can of soup, or a bag of chips and a soda.  Please discuss this with your child. Have them think about how this is the only meal many of these people receive that day.  Is that what they would like to eat for the day?  We are called to be Christ's hands and feet on earth?  Let's really think about how Christ would treat a hungry person.  A lunch should include a sandwich, a piece of fruit, a bottle of water, maybe some chips or crackers, and a small treat. Please also encourage your child to write a short note or prayer to include to the recipient.  Thank you to the students who are already doing this and are providing wonderful lunches to the less fortunate.  I feel that I should not have to check the lunches that are brought in; however, unfortunately, this has not been the recent reality.  I appreciate your help with this matter!

Also, homework has once again become an issue with several students.  I will be having the student call a parent at recess to let him/her know that homework was not completed.  It seems to be the same students who choose not to do homework each day.  Homework is not assigned as busy work, but rather as reviewing information or skills that the students need to progress and be successful.  Currently, there are some who think of homework as an option to complete at their leisure.  Again, I ask for parents' support.  I know that working together we can solve this and make sure our students are given the best opportunity for success.

Let's address these two issues together and start the 2nd quarter off right!

Great job on The Miracle Worker play!  It was one of our best performances!  Special thanks to Mr. Vidauri for the awesome pump that really worked.  We have never had that, and it added so much to our play!

Also, the 8th graders will begin reading and annotating To Kill a Mockingbird.  Annotating is a skill that they will need in high school.  It is best if each student buys their own copy of the book, so that they can write and highlight in it.  You may purchase this book used online, but it cannot have markings in it.  It must be a copy that has not previously been annotated.  It is not permitted to use a book that another student has used a previous year.  If you choose not to purchase your own copy, students may check one out from the library, but will then need post-it notes to write on and place in the book.  It is really best to invest in their own copy.  It will help them to learn the annotating process well; this will be a valuable skill in high school.  They will need the books in class on Oct. 15.
