October 29-November 2

The treasure at the end of the rainbow.....OLM!  I took this picture this week and thought I'd share.

Service Project:  Our class's service project is to reach out to those affected by cancer.  This year we will once again be making and selling bracelets.  We will be making navy blue bracelets to sell for OLM's 85th anniversary.  The money we raise selling these will go to Relay for Life.  If you would like to help by donating to this project, we could really use some navy blue beads.  I know the beads regularly go on sale at Michaels and Hobby Lobby, and they offer 40% off coupons weekly.  So, if you wish, please send in a string of navy beads to add to our supplies.  I will donate all the wire and clasps, and we still have some white beads from last year's cancer color bracelets.  Thank you for your support!

Grades:  I will not be sending home a weekly progress report this week since I will meeting with everyone for conferences.  First quarter grades were sent home on Friday, Oct. 19.  The new quarter began on Oct. 15.  I will be able to give parents an update at conferences as to how their child is doing so far in the second quarter.

New Seats:  As is my usual practice, I changed the seating chart for the new quarter.  I'm sure parents may have heard from their students that either they really like their new seats or they don't.   I do not change seats unless it is absolutely necessary.  In fact, at the conference the teachers attended in Visalia, the speaker talked about important skills for children to learn for the 21st century, and at the top of the list was collaboration/being able to work with others.  It ranked as high as technology.  That being said, it is crucial that we teach our children to work well with others, even those who may not be their "best friends."  If they are to be successful adults, it is a valuable skill that they must learn now.  Please help me in making your children as successful as possible.  We have talked about this in class, and I am counting on your support at home.  I explained to them that sometimes even as adults in the workplace, it is necessary to "branch out" and work with others that you would not choose to work with.  This will help them to learn collaboration.  It will also help them to learn to be more inclusive.  This is also a difficult skill at this age. Sometimes in junior high, students form cliques and become more exclusive, rather than inclusive.  It is important that as adults we are mindful of this, and do what we can to teach them to work together and include others.  I am working on this in the classroom and on the playground.  Please help me to do the best job possible for our kids.  If we work together, we can set them up for success in their future!

The 8th grade will have 2 performances of The Miracle Worker this week for the lower grades.  Eighth grade parents are welcome to attend.  performances are at 1:15 and will last about 1 hour.  They will be in the auditorium.  Please be sure to ask your child which day he/she is performing.  Keep in mind this is not a "professional" performance.  We only practice during reading class.  I do not expect perfection, but students are expected to know their lines, bring clothes for a costume, and give their best effort to play their role.  They are graded on their performance and effort.  We have spent quite a bit of time in reading class reading the novel, watching the movie, and studying Helen Keller.  This is our culminating activity.  The younger kids enjoy watching and look forward to this each year.  We hope you can join us.

The next essay book test will be on Oct. 23
